Storage Allocation Tracking involves correlating storage resource data in order to summarise and report on the cumulative storage resources. For example, from a server perspective, the total allocation of storage would not be a true reflection of the actual or cumulative storage allocated because the server would be unaware of mirroring, replication, shadow Copies/Business Continuity Volumes, RAID overhead and snapshots associated with the LUN.
Storage Allocation Tracking is essential in calculating the true overhead (value) of the storage allocated and consumed.
Storage Utility Billing is an essential part of a Private Utility Solution. However, not all utility storage solutions are implemented to provide billing at a storage consumption level. One of our largest utility contracts provides storage based on LUN allocation. By provisioning metering at this level, we are able to monitor the true level of storage allocated including mirrored and replicated data and provide the business with reports and statistics against which procurement can be based or billing made.
